The government has launched a significant new push to support families across England, with the rollout of the Best Start in Life campaign and a brand-new, streamlined website. This initiative aims to tackle the overwhelming amount of conflicting online advice faced by parents and ensure every child has the best possible foundations for life.
A New Digital Hub for Parents
On 1 September, the new Best Start in Life website officially went live, replacing the previous Childcare Choices and integrating with the existing NHS Start for Life and UK Government Childcare Choices websites. The goal is to simplify and consolidate information gathering, making it easier for parents and carers to access all the support they need in one dedicated, trusted place.
The new digital hub offers a wider array of resources, guiding families from pregnancy right through to starting school and beyond. It boasts a colourful, accessible, and interactive user experience, breaking down topics into six main themes:
- Pregnancy
- Baby
- Toddler
- Childcare and Early Years Education
- School Readiness
- Childcare Eligibility Checker
A key feature is the inclusion of locally oriented functions, such as the ability to search for family support in your local area and find your local council by simply entering a postcode. This helps families access services closer to home.
Cutting Through the Noise of Online Advice
The campaign comes in direct response to research from King’s College London and Censuswide, which found that parents are increasingly overwhelmed by conflicting information online, risking delays in crucial parenting decisions.
The survey of over 2,500 parents and expectant parents revealed:
- A staggering 7 in 10 reported feeling overwhelmed by the sheer volume of information.
- 46% turn to online sources for advice, with 33% using social media and 30% relying on chat groups.
- 60% said searching for the right advice has caused stress, anxiety and taken quality time away from their child.
The Best Start in Life campaign brings together trusted NHS and Government-backed guidance on vital topics like feeding, sleeping, speech and language, and child development.
Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson commented: “That is why we are cutting through the noise with our new nationwide campaign, giving parents an evidence-backed alternative to the barrage of unchecked and sometimes unreliable advice.”
High-Profile Backing and Local Support
The initiative is part of the new Labour government’s Plan for Change, which has a clear objective: ensuring 75% of five-year-olds in England achieve a good level of development by 2028. Prime Minister Keir Starmer has reaffirmed this commitment to parents and carers, with his full letter available for public interest.
To amplify the message, the campaign has launched a new film, The Story of You, featuring expert child psychologist Professor Sam Wass, celebrity parents (including dancer Oti Mabuse), and, in a popular move, Mummy Pig from TV’s Peppa Pig. The film celebrates the parenting journey and reminds families that help is always at hand, linking directly to the new website.
The digital campaign is backed by real-world investment, including the full rollout of the 30 hours childcare offer for working families and a commitment to in-person support. This includes £12 million in funding to develop Best Start Family Hubs in 65 previously unfunded areas, building on a planned over £500 million investment to create up to 1,000 hubs across the country from April 2026.
As Professor Sam Wass noted, “Giving parents access to a single online source of credible information, combined with support in their communities, is vital to helping parents feel empowered in the early years of their child’s life.”
