What is Loose Parts Play?

The tube hasn’t changed, but the child’s imagination has transformed it again and again.

This is the essence of Loose Parts Play.

First introduced by architect Simon Nicholson in 1971, Loose Parts Theory suggests that the richness of children’s play depends on the variety of materials available for them to move, manipulate, combine, redesign, take apart and rebuild.

Unlike traditional toys that have one intended purpose, loose parts have endless possibilities. They place children, not adults, in charge of the learning.

Rather than asking, “What should children make?”, Loose Parts Theory asks a much more powerful question:

“What kind of environment encourages children to think, create and discover for themselves?”

Why Loose Parts Matter
